Radical Communal Groups of Western Washington

Radical Communal Groups (RCG) is an umbrella organization aimed at catalyzing and supporting economically and politically radical communal living groups currently existent or forming in Western Washington.

The goal is for this to lead to a resilient, place-based network of land-based projects focused on mutual aid, solidarity economics, systems change, and movement building.

What do we mean by Radical Communal Groups?

There are many versions of community living: RCG is specifically interested in developing material and social support for groups at the more communal and egalitarian end of the spectrum, such as those practicing income sharing and/or incorporating cooperative businesses, and mission-driven groups that lean heavily on resource sharing as a core organizing principle.

Why be a part of this group?

You might be part of an existing group that wants to move more towards a radical communal economic model. You might want to help start a new group. You might want to support these kinds of groups and help develop the network. You might be new to all of this, think it’s a great idea, and want to learn more!

Our core values

  • anti-oppression & anti-fascism

  • post/anti-capitalism

What are we doing?

We are a new and evolving group. Our primary activities have been hosting regular in-person and online meetups for people part of or interested in forming groups that would be part of this network. We are currently nurturing three projects directly and are in dialog with others. More on those below.

We plan to support our projects through:

  • Outreach, support, and networking for potential founders and members

  • Orienting and educating people new to intentional communities and income/resource sharing

  • Researching and presenting on topics of interest

  • Facilitating connection between groups as they form and develop

Projects currently involved with this group

The Goodenough Community - The Goodenough Community is an almost 50 year old community rooted in a deep and skilled commitment to transformational learning through relationship. The Sahale Learning Center is the community’s land-based hub, providing a space for events by Goodenough and for aligned communities and organizations. Goodenough is in a reorganization phase and is currently seeking new members to guide the community’s path forward, which includes expanding the residential community at Sahale to further the community’s vision and mission.

Fireweed Community - Caitlin and Nathaniel have a vision for a large, multiracial, rural, income-sharing community in Western Washington and are seeking between one and six more co-founders to join in the founding process. They imagine a community that relearns right relationship with others and the land through collaborating on community businesses and domestic labor, grounded in a wider commitment to systems change work. Here is their working vision document.

Cooperation Seattle - This project envisions a leftist, land-based community hub for post-capitalist learning, solidarity, and organizing with a residential and nonresidential body of stewards in South Seattle. CS has land, housing, and a founding group of four people working on core structures, agreements, and collective business development in preparation for welcoming new residents.
